Teeth Whitening

Bleaching/whitening can be an easy and effective way to remove stains and discolouration from teeth to give you a whiter and brighter smile. Stains come in all forms and colours and can range from yellow to black depending on the cause (common causes include coffee, tea, wine, tobacco etc..). It is a very safe procedure under professional guidance.

What are the options?

At home:

Whitening toothpastes:

All commercial brands of toothpaste offer a whitening option. They are slightly more abrasive and work by removing superficial stains. They are a good option to reduce the development of stains but are not capable of removing stains or whitening teeth.

Whitening gels:

“Take-home bleach” is perfect for gradually whitening the teeth. Custom-fit trays are made from a mould of your teeth that will fit your mouth perfectly to offer optimal and even distribution of the whitening gel. Whitening gels are an excellent choice as you do it in the comfort of your home and you control how white your teeth become. It usually takes around 2-3 weeks of nightly or bi-nightly applications and extra gel can be purchased for a “top up” treatment every 4-6 months to maintain the sparkly white shade that you want.

In Surgery:

Laser Whitening (ZOOM!):

Laser Whiting is fast and effective offering instant results. It involves a gel that is applied to the surfaces of your teeth that have been very carefully isolated to protect your gums. The gel is then activated by a bright light that actively whitens your teeth and usually takes up to 2 hours in the chair but results can last for years.

At Queen Street Dental our dentists are trained professionally to ensure this procedure is performed appropriately and safely. We take utmost care with our Zoom! procedure to eliminate the possibility of any gum trauma during in chair bleaching.

Sometimes Whitening gels are recommending after laser whitening to help maintain the pearly white gleam

Are there any side-effects?

The most common side-effect associated with bleaching is some sensitivity. Minor sensitivity is nothing to be alarmed about, it usually occurs the first time you bleach and settles within the first few days.

This can be minimised by following our recommended protocol that will be discussed with you at your initial appointment.
